Meet Oakley, The Child Center, Inc. Newest Facility Dog

The Child Center, Inc. is thrilled to announce the arrival of their newest facility dog, Oakley. Oakley can perform over 40 commands but his primary job at The Child Center, Inc. is to provide comfort and support to children who are talking about the details of their abuse during a forensic interview.

The Child Center, Inc. added its second facility dog to its list of services that have long included forensic interviews, child & family advocacy, and therapeutic services for child victims of sexual and physical abuse. Oakley, a 3-year-old black Labrador, is trained to comfort children and their caregivers in addition to the agency’s other facility dog Reka, a 4-year-old brown Labrador.

“The presence of Oakley during a forensic interview is a source of comfort to a child when they are sharing a traumatic experience to a perfect stranger.,” explains Cammie Maue, Oakley’s handler. Cammie Maue, a forensic interviewer with The Child Center, Inc., trained with Oakley for several weeks to become his handler. Oakley also lives with Cammie full time. “With the addition of Oakley our agency can now offer comfort to the child and the caregiver simultaneously, and allow them to be with the child during the entire court process if needed.”

Champ Assistance Dogs, a nonprofit organization that places skilled facility dogs with professionals who utilize their dogs’ special skills in healthcare facilities, courthouses, and children’s advocacy centers, trained Oakley.

You can follow Oakley on Instagram @oakley.cac and friend him on Facebook @OakleyMaue to keep up with his antics and stories about being a facility dog. For more information about Oakley and The Child Center, Inc. please visit www.thechildcenter.com.
